Halloween Parade

10/27/2012 - By Marea Edynak

Are you ready for a night of madness and madcap fun? Then join the thousands of New Yorkers who march, dance, sing, chant….you name it… in the annual Greenwich Village Halloween Parade.

Every year there are hundreds of giant puppets, more than 50 bands, all styles of dancers, specially costumed performances and outrageously creative people from everywhere for you to enjoy.

This is one of my favorite nights of the year wandering among the streets filled with throngs of costumed people in imaginative costumes almost beyond belie. Everyone interacts with everyone else and people are always willing to pose for photos.

To top off the evening you could have dinner or cocktail at the most haunted restaurant in NYC, One if By Land Two if by Sea, in the former carriage house of Alexander Hamilton. You might see his ghost or that of his beloved daughter Theodosia. While we were there 3 Halloweens ago, we saw a guest take a photo of 2 other handsomely costumed guests. When we looked at the photo there was an “extra” lady in white in the photo. Spooky, but true.

Everyone in costume is invited to join the Parade. Line up at 6th Avenue south of Spring Street and North of Canal Street between 6:30 and 8:30 PM.

The Parade starts at 7:00 PM on 6th Avenue from Spring Street to 16th Street. You can also watch it on TV: WPIX Channel 11 from 7:30 to 10:00 PM and New York 1 from 8:00 to 9:30 PM.

Tip: If you go by cab or car, cross over to the West Side well above or below the Parade. Many streets are closed to accommodate the Parade.
