Don't Be Fooled by Pedicab Fares

Rider Beware

Are your feet tired? Looking for a charming photo op to show the folks back home all the fun you’ve had in The City? What could be better than zipping through Manhattan’s traffic clogged streets that a ride in a pedicab. It’s a favorite of tourists and some harried New Yorkers who know how to go about it.

The bicycle pulled carriages are NYC’s version of the Asian rickshaws and can squeeze in up to 4 small or 2 large riders. They will weave you in and out of traffic often faster than a taxi or take you on a leisurely ride through Central Park.

A word of caution: Give your destination to the driver and AGREE on a set price before you set foot in the carriage. Fares are not standard and you could be in for a big shock at the end of your ride without an agreement.

Each pedicab is allowed to set its own rates and fees as long as they are written on a rate card. Some rides are reasonable and some are seemingly outrageous. One that I read about charged a $100 per person fee plus a charge per block.

It wouldn’t surprise me to find out that some unethical drivers had more than 1 rate card.

I remember a great  ride I had when I was late meeting a friend and couldn’t find a cab. The driver wrapped a blanket around my legs and sped me across town for $15. Of course, I asked the price first and so should you.
