Stature of Liberty Closed Indefinitely

11/11/2012 - By Marea Edynak

The Statue of Liberty is closed indefinitely for repairs

Although The Stature of Liberty herself escaped damage from Hurricane Sandy the infrastructure of Liberty Island and Ellis Island did not fare so well. The rising tides and pounding waves caused significant damage to the docks and the promenade around Liberty Island.

Several feet of water filled the basement o the museum building on Ellis Island. It ruined some mechanical equipment but did not harm the museums archives or artifacts.

The mechanical systems on Liberty Island, including electricity, are not yet functioning. The flood waters entered the basements of the buildings that house the café and the gift shop.

The docks that receive the large tourist ferries are damaged and must be repaired or rebuilt and normal cruise operations are suspended.

Tip For Travelers: To see Lady Liberty for the time being, Circle Line is offering a one-hour cruise that circles both islands. Visitors will have good photo opportunities from the water. This cruise is also available to CityPASS holders.
