A Weekend at Montauk Beach

8/22/2013 - By Marea Edynak

Wow, what a difference a weekend makes. The hordes pile in from the City by jitney bus, train, boat, car, plane and helicopter.  It’s hard to find a few grains of vacant sand in between the crowds of sun worshipers.

The least stressful way to get there is to charter a helicopter if you can afford it.  Prices range from $3400 for a 4 passenger helicopter to $3950 for a 6 passenger helicopter.  That is one way.  Double it for a  round trip.

The Long Island Railroad has frequent service and takes about 2 & ½ to 3 & ½ hours depending on the train. One way fares run from a low of $13.50 for seniors to a high of $27 at peak times.

Car and jitneys take 4 to 5 hours depending on the traffic, which is horrible on weekends.  Several companies have jitney bus service and the fares vary with the level of service and amenities. Mostly the one way cost is somewhere between $ 25 and  $50.
Next time I think that I'll take a $2.50 subway ride to Coney Island Beach.
