Happy Thanksgiving

11/27/2013 - By Marea Edynak

On Saturday, November 1, 1777 the Continental Congress  declared the first national day of Thanksgiving in America.

President George Washington tried to set a specific date back in 1789. He wanted America to dine and give thanks on Nov. 26, which happened to fall on a Thursday that year. But no one really listened until President Abraham Lincoln's 1863 proclamation that Americans officially celebrate Thanksgiving on  the last Thursday in November.

In 1933 the last Thursday in November fell on the last day of the month. President Franklin D. Roosevelt was  concerned that consumers didn't have enough time between Thanksgiving and Christmas to shop for gifts. He moved Thanksgiving to the second Thursday in November. Thirty-two states followed suit, but 16 states refused to change. For the next couple years, the country celebrated Thanksgiving on 2 different dates.

In 1941 congress decided to unify the celebrations. After some deliberation they decided that the last Thursday in November would be  the legal day for Thanksgiving. President Roosevelt signed the bill into law on Dec. 26 that year.

We all have a lot to be grateful for. Happy Thanksgiving to Everyone.
