Best Deli Sandwiches in NYC

1/29/2013 - By Marea Edynak

You’ll find the best deli’s in the world in New York City and the 2nd Avenue Deli gets my vote for the best of the best.

When you long for an Empire State Building high sandwich filled with pastrami or corned  beef, head for  162 East 33rd Street between Lexington and Third Avenue in Murray Hill. The 2nd Avenue Deli left their East Village location at 2nd Avenue and East 10th Street a few years ago  but kept their famous name and many of their clients.

Most famous for their pastrami and rye with cole slaw and Russian dressing with a mouth puckering sour pickle on the side,  they  offer many other choices of sandwiches, soups and main courses….all certified kosher.

My absolute favorite is the home made corned beef on a roll, pictured above before adding the extras. It is a little pricy but it makes 2 meals for most people. Or if you don’t share, save the rest for lunch the next day. Usually I can’t wait that long and have my second ½ for breakfast….a bit decadent and delicious.

Eat in or order out. Either way the food is a treat.

Tip For Travelers: If you are not from NYC, Deli is short for Delicatessen
