La Paella Tapas Bar for Good Spanish Food at Reasonable Prices

3/19/2013 - By Marea Edynak

For some good Spanish food and cozy atmosphere try this delightful little restaurant in the East Village. As the name suggests, the specialties are tapas and paellas and they offer a good variety of each to please all tastes.

The décor is Valencian with white washed walls and lots of bouquets of dried roses hanging from the rafters. Candles and dim lighting make for a romantic and intimate atmosphere.  Cozy here means tiny with not much room between tables. The upstairs room seats little more than 30 dinners. Large groups are seated downstairs.

Tapas, or little plates, range from $8 to $12 and feature seafood, meat and vegetarian choices. We thought the Vieiras a laplancha (Grilled sea scallops) at $13.00  were some of the best in the City.

The paellas are delicious and the chef was not heavy handed with the saffron. We chose the  Basque Paella  with Chorizo, chicken, sausage, shrimp, clams langoustine, mussels and squid  at $19.50 per person. Others start at  $16.99 a person and include a vegetarian choice.

Our Crema Catalana , a special  Flan , was dense and creamy.  Deserts are $8 to $8.50

Spanish wines and red and white fruit filled Sangrias are featured.

Tip for Travelers: If you are on a budget try the 3  course Early Bird Special menu at $16.99. You get a select choice of Appetizers, an entrée or 2 tapas, ice cream and your choice of a glass of sangria or beer. Early Bird hours are 5 to 7 PM from Sunday through Thursday and 4 to 6 PM on Friday and Saturday.
