The Statue of Liberty Will Reopen by July 4

3/21/2013 - By Marea Edynak

The Department of the Interior announced this week that the Stature of Liberty will be open for visitors by July 4.

When waves from Hurricane Sandy washed completely over Liberty Island in New York Harbor, they severely damaged the docks and several buildings on the Island. The extensive damage forced the closing of both Liberty Island and Ellis Island.

After a year long renovation project, the statue was open for just 1 day before the hurricane flooded Liberty Island. Although it was forced to close again, the  statue  itself was not harmed.

Reported by The National Park Service, “All electrical and mechanicals on Ellis Island are underwater; a fuel tank has been dislodged. Liberty Island may have lost all high-voltage equipment.”

Also hurricane damaged were the boat docks for the ferries carrying visitors from Lower Manhattan and Liberty State Park in Jersey City. It is a massive undertaking to repair and rebuild all of the infrastructure needed before visitors can once again visit.

Dedicated on October 28, 1886, The Statue of Liberty was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States. As well as being a symbol of New York City, it is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy.

We all welcome you back Lady Liberty
