23 Skidoo at The Flat Iron Building

5/30/2013 - By Marea Edynak

Yes, that phrase started in NYC, too. Most people associate it with the roaring 20’s but it is actually a police force phrase. Do you know how it came about?

It started back in 1901 when our beautiful Art Deco Flat Iron building was being built. The position of the building’s  triangular site where Fifth Avenue and Broadway meet at  23rd Street split the wind blowing from the north and would cause downdrafts from above and updrafts from the vaulted area under the street. .

The wind was unpredictable and could be treacherous at times especially to ladies with wide skirts which would swirl up when the wind blew. It seemed to be a favorite pastime of naughty men to try to get a glimpse up their dresses. When the policemen would catch them, they would yell 23 skidoo.

Oh, for a gentler time when the police protected our virtue!
