Brooklyn Bridge, an historic Landmark

6/14/2013 - By Marea Edynak

After 14 long years of construction The Brooklyn Bridge opened on May 24.1883 and was the world’s largest suspension bridge at that time. It was the first and only land passage between Manhattan and Brooklyn. Before that you could only cross The East River by boat or barge.

Now 130 years later the neo-Gothic bridge still stands up under daily use by cars, bikes, walkers and runners.  A much loved feature is the elevated pedestrian path that lets you cross the river without being bothered by the traffic rushing past a level below. Or crawling past during rush hour. It’s a wonderful place to take great photos of both Brooklyn and Manhattan.
